Bring a pair of jeans and dresses. When it hits 70 in Europe the sundresses come out! Sneakers with the dresses will be fine. You could do fashion sneakers or trainers. Do you really only have a backpack to bring?

Can you wear lightweight pants like nylon? I have a couple of pairs of athleta nylon pants that work for this purpose and still look like real pants

I wouldn’t wear leggings that are stretchy and tight.

What about lightweight pants that have some stretch?
I have 2 pairs of these and have travelled with them. They pack small also.

Just looked at the website and it doesn't specify you need to wear a skirt, just that your pants/skirt should come down to at least mid-thigh and that you shouldn't wear see-through clothing.

Why not just wear non-legging pants, or a pair of leggings with like a tunic length dress over it. The skirted leggings look weird to me and I don't understand why you are leaning that direction.

So glad this issue is being discussed. I am in a bit of a dilemma over here. We are packing for Spain, France & Italy. First up is the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and we are going to be climbing one of the towers. I just read today that the descent down is quite a harried experience. Just back from italy last night. I didn't wear leggings, but tons of people around us were in leggings. We went to a million churches and the vatican and most didn't care about dress at all; those that did just said no bare shoulders or shorts. Leggings are fine. Lots of europeans in leggings or tight pants too.

I think the only place that cares is the Vatican and they care about being covered. However it has happened to me twice at monasteries in the US that they require (and provide) skirts for women which i pulled on on top of my pants.

Western European churches have no dress code. I don't think OP will have a problem unless she visits an active monastery. In Greece, monasteries require a certain dress code (covered shoulders, skirts for women), and even then, we saw people flout it and the monks said nothing - they need the money.

Yup. These are great. Bring a pair of these, leggings, and jeans. That will cover everything. Maybe a dress if you wear them. A few tops & cardigan/wrap.

Bring lightweight underwear & socks - they dry faster. And travel size febreeze.

You must not have toured any religious places or churches. Let me tell you, they care A LOT!!! They want pants or skirts down to almost your knees and no bare shoulders. If you somehow get in and you're inappropriately dressed, they will escort you out if you can't modify your attire in some way to meet their requirements. We saw it happen in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

The first rule of being a good tourist is to respect the rules of the hosts, whether that be the host country or the host facility or a private home.


They care that your are covered up, and leggings meet that requirement.

+1 Don't take your tightest pair. Take a substantial pair of leggings and a longer, looser tunic that comes to near the knee and you should be good to go. Along with a scarf for you head if it's really conservative there.
