Commonwealth Indian in North Bethesda (Pike & Rose). It's a really nicely decorated place as well so feels like a real night out.

Dishes of India just south of Old Town - fantastic food.

Totally agree with Dishes of India. It is in the Belle View Shopping Center. We love it! We also like Taj of India on Rt. 1, about a mile away. So 2 great Indian restaurants within a mile of each other. We're blessed!

Dishes of India is one of my favorites, but I live in DC so don't make it there very often. I've recently discovered Cafe of India in Tenleytown and it is soooooo good!

I like Jewel of India the best. Have also heard good things about Spice Kraft Indian bistro in Alexandria.

Rasika - great food, cocktails, atmosphere

Raaga (VA) - North Indian Fare

Woodlands (Va) - South Indian Fare

Mama Tigre (Va) - Indian/Latin Fusion, great flavors

+1 except Woodlands (MD). Never been to the one in VA.

Haven't been in a while, but the only restaurant I ever liked was Woodlands (MD).

Me too, but it closed.

Rasika is amazing.

For something less upscale Chennai Hoopers in Germantown or Commonwealth Indian in Rockville.

My favorite is woodlands in VA, but you should know it’s vegetarian (not all vegan, but plenty of vegan options)

I think this is a hard question to answer. There are so many different types of Indian cuisine. What does your friend like? I'm a South Indian, and I'm always on the lookout for truly excellent South Indian vegetarian places. Those are hard to find.
