French bulldogs are definitely an example of breeding form over function. If you want a dog to play with, nit a good choice. I had a little terrier as a kid and she'd go on 5 mile hikes with us.

Nobody I know finds French Bulldogs ugly. Pugs? Sure, many find them ugly. But whenever we walk our Frenchie people will literally cross the street to come take a picture and pet him. In contrast to breeds like pitbulls, which everyone with a brain seeks to avoid because they're unpredictable and the nitwits who have them, especially <125 pound women, could never control one if and when they decide to snap.

We are a Frenchie-owning family (not my choice). Like a PP said---every breed has its pros and cons. Here's my list:

Pros: Extremely loving, playful, very funny and expressive, lots of personality; they are good city dogs because they do not require a ton of exercise or space
Cons: The snoring and the farting are annoying but the biggest problem we have is that they are really not very bright and are incredibly difficult to train because they are so stubborn and willful. They can also become extremely attached to one person. Our Frenchie HOWLS like the world is ENDING whenever our daughter walks out the door, even if the rest of the family is sitting right there.

Like I said, not my choice. I love our Frenchie, but do not want another one.

You're trolling off the French Bulldog chasing ducks thread. You're probably some wackjob "pit mommy" with an ugly dog you can't control which yearns to attack kids and other animals. You also can't afford a cute and well-bred dog which can cost upwards of $10,000. Get a freaking life.

I have not seen that thread and have no idea what you are talking about.

I have an Irish setter from a breeder and a westie we got from a rescue. Neither "attacks" or yearns to attack anyone.

I could afford to spend $10k on a dog but why would I ever do that?

Well-bred French bulldog is an oxymoron. I suppose cute is subjective.

uh, you realize they have short legs, right? It's more than just their breathing issues. It's like saying a baby shouldn't exist because they can't run for 20 min. For a small dog, a 20 min walk is like a half marathon for an adult human.


? Huh? I have 6-7 lb dogs and we take two 30-60 minute walks per day and they spend a lot of the rest of the day wrestling and running in the back yard (and the other half napping). This is not a short leg thing. Mine are maltese mixes.

Yup, I love dogs but never met a Frenchie I liked. My neighbor has one and she can't have visitors because the dog bites everyone. It bit me already (broke skin) and tries to bite me whenever I see her. My neighbor is also a terrible pet owner for not training him better.

I'm a French Bulldog owner and what you are describing sounds like a combo of poor breeding and training. I try not to judge other people based on their preferences in dog breeds, so I'll ignore the obnoxious comments. I got mine from a very reputable breeder (and certainly did not pay $4000!). She can hike up to three miles as long as the weather is cool enough (brachycephalic dogs don't do well in the heat). She is truly the sweetest dog- gets along well with our rescue dog and kids, is up for lots of play but does not require a ton of daily exercise and is very affectionate. Frenchies are very social dogs, so they do not do well in situations where they don't get a fair amount of attention. Just like any dog, they have pros and cons and it's important to know what characteristics matter to you and your family.

The smell is likely due to skin/ear infection because they are prone to allergies. That is why he is licking himself....

20 m is too long for a Frenchie to walk.....
