This one came to mind for me too. Very welcoming, open and student-centric.

I am an Elon grad and found the school to be like this. Professors are caring, helpful and there are great activities for kids interested in everything.

I'd look for a school with a pre-frosh summer program. My university used to bring incoming freshman to campus for 6-8 weeks for summer programs to help them get acclimated and enrichment. It was super low stress, but meant that you had preexisting friends and knew your way around when you showed up in the fall. You would also hear from upper classmen what courses or professors to avoid. It was a nice soft start.

I have no idea what schools do these now, especially with covid, but it's worth looking.

Op, your son is looking for a school for fall 2022, right?

A lot of the schools suggested here are past the application due dates.

NP - For those recommending Loyola Marymount - can you elaborate? I've considered it for my child, but some of the things I've read worry me. Some people have said there are a lot of wealthy kids who are only there for the LA lifestyle - a lot of social media "mean girl" types. That it can be hard to fit in socially. I'd love for that to not be true since I have heard other things that sound appealing.

It lists a lot of smaller liberal arts schools that have these very supportive environments. It sounds like what you are looking for. Unfortunately, most of them are expensive and not close by.

My child is in similar situation and Goucher is on that list. Any feedback on Goucher?

Goucher is a very supportive school. There are academic advisors and student mentors there for first-year students from orientation onward, as well as counseling and several academic support centers. And they give generous merit aid to kids with higher stats.

A man I knew had a rough time in high school- drugs, ended up in juvenile detention, emotional challenges - and he thrived at Goucher.

I think school size maybe should be a consideration, no? I think it's too easy for kids to be anonymous and fall through the cracks at big schools. If that's what you want, as opposed to people who get to know their students, then maybe that would work.
