My parents are in their 70s and my dad still calls my mom MFL (my foxy lady).

My mom signs all cards to him "Love, YFL"

It sounds so dumb but it’s one of the very few things that I miss about our relationship. I’ll never be called that name again and it still makes me sad.

I can totally relate. I had one of those innocuous nicknames that wasn’t cutesy and I missed never hearing it when we separated.

We call each other by fake "old person names" when one or both of us is being curmudgeonly. It helps lighten the mood and always cracks a smile. He calls me Gertrude/Trudy and I call him Harold. Neither has any similarity to our real names.
No ill will meant if either of those are your real names btw- they just feel old timey to us and we've been using them in this way since we were dating.

The nickname isn’t cute and I say it to myself (in my head). They don’t know the nickname.

Our nicknames have evolved from one word to another, then stayed stable. His for me started as my name and ended up Woo Loo. Sounds nothing like my name. It is what he calls me and thinks of me as, and I only hear my given name come out of his mouth when he's irritated with me!

My nn for him is Busband which is stupid and I don't know how it happened or what the "B" stands for, but it is and he loves it

We don't notice our nns anymore so I'm sure we say them aournd other people but not in a mushy way (Like, "Woo! Can you bring another glass from the kitchen?"
