Do they have a permanent source of funding yet? My understanding is that initially the money is coming from Covid funds

Once it's worked through startup costs, it'll cost less than seats in a physical building.


There still needs to be money earmarked for it, which takes money away from the existing budget items. And those items don’t necessarily cost less because there are a few students not in the classroom. Those students are still on the rolls of their existing schools, which means they still get certain services provided by them. It’s not necessarily an overall cost savings for the system, or even a wash.


How is it any different than any other special program MCPS offers?

Its far cheaper to run a virtual school and it helps with overcrowding. How is it any different from a child transferring from one school to another a special program. It saves on buses, staffing, the physical building and grounds and so much more. If we need to make cuts and you are worried about spending, we should do more virtual, not less.
