You ARE receiving something of value in exchange for your deposit — a spot for your child. This means the IRS does not allow it to be converted to a gift. It’s not the school’s decision, it’s the law.

Exactly. Beyond that, it is credited to your tuition payment if you actually re-enroll. Why is this so hard?

It’s payment to hold the spot. A disincentive.

Our school is also 10%, which is about $3,700. It’s so ridiculous but we won’t know the decision until 3/4. We wrote to the current school for extended deadline but got a firm no.
