I eat the (junk) chocolate mindlessly through the day as my stress surges with incessant short fuse demands. And then I unwind with wine at night. I know it’s bad. But I take the point of replacing the wind down wine with a different habit. I don’t see myself taking up running. But maybe I can try a yoga tape or something. Recognize it’s not much but need to be realistic.
That’s why I said cut out the chocolate. Because those sugary treats are small but they pack a big punch and without realizing it you’re eating a couple handfuls of M&Ms and that will add up. But don’t deny yourself all chocolate otherwise you may end up failing. Ask me, I know!
I would say cut down on both, neither out. Go 2-3 days (MT, MTW without wine) one glass on work nights, 2 on weekends. That keeps you at 7 or fewer for women that is recommended. Only keep individually wrapped, chocolates in the house. If you have kids that need snacks/treats, buy ones that don't tempt you.
Wait to have the glass of wine until you are ready to relax and are paying attention to drinking it - not while making dinner, putting away laundry, kids to sleep, etc.
Have you tried bitters? They have that edge or wine, without the alcohol. That, or super strong ginger tea (which also has a bite) is what I have on non-wine nights.
