OP here. Her honking suddenly resolved on its own last night, as typically happens before an urgent vet appt. I have a pug and her honking cough is a collapsing trachea. I had surgery for her brachycephalic airways to help relieve pressure from her trachea overworking. That won't apply to your dog, but I would absolutely at least call/email the vet about this because a collapsing trachea is serious and needs to be treated. Telltale sign is a honking cough.

OP here. After reading a ton and watching videos of various dog coughs (and considering she is still acting totally normal otherwise), I am starting to suspect it’s a trachea issue. This morning, I dug up an old email address for a vet friend and sent a video of a honking spell and he got her an appointment with a center for tomorrow.
