You are trying to trick yourself that you're sipping on a gin & tonic? This is like compulsively puffing on an unlit cigarette after quitting cigs. It's addiction behavior.

+1. We've done dry January in the past with all the faux cocktails, NA beer, sparkling water. It's so pathetic and weak to need all that junk to distract you from not drinking alcohol.

This year we're just drinking water.

You know what's pathetic and weak? Being cruel to others you don't know online, in response to their polite request for suggestions. And I'm not OP. I'm just not a miserable human who disparages others for doing something that they, by their own admission, have done themselves.

I'm critiquing my own behavior. In retrospect substituting alcoholic drinks for tons of sweet sugary (or sugar substitute) mock drinks, fizzy drinks, and carby drinks is weak. You're just substituting one vice for another. It's not a display of strong will and discipline. It's like giving up ice cream for a month and snacking on pie and cake instead.

I posted right after you and spoke too soon. Going to try this. I love bitters!

Some of us don't like water, Deb! We like delicious things to wash it all down!

(and we like jokes and not being miserable twatts!)

+1 You are so right about the unpredictability—it really does help to keep things interesting.

Has anyone tried the expensive nonalcoholic canned drinks like Moment, Curious Elixers, Unspiked, Recess, Kin, etc? Are they worth ordering?

Why do people do dry January? Curious.

Because they drink too much in general, and definitely drink too much over the holidays. So they take a month to detox from that. But what they don’t do is actually try to change their mind frame while they’re at it, hence the desire for non alcoholic wine or non alcoholic beer or mocktails. If they spent the month truly trying to get rid of their Pavlovian response to sipping a drink equaling being happier, it would be helpful, but that’s not usually how they do it

And no I’m not a teetotaler.

My honest answer? Water, coffee, tea. Decondition yourself from wanting something to drink as a treat. If you’re actually interested in drinking less. If you’re just trying to get through the month before you back to having alcoholic drinks with dinner, then I suggest ginger ale with a splash of cranberry juice garnished with a lime in a low ball glass with a wedge of lime

I'm already bored by most suggestions on here, sadly. I guess I've been dry too long.

I like "Nope" drinks in the mixer section from wegman's. Particularly the jalapeno. "Hot" flavors are a good substitution for the burn of alcohol and they are getting better and better.

Jalapeno margarita mix (look for low cal) mixed with sparkling water is good.

Non alcoholic gins like Ritual are good with diet tonic water and lime. There's enough going on there with the flavors.

Non alcoholic rums are terrible so far. I used one to cut my egg nog and added lots of nutmeg. Not bad.
