A lot of teachers left Loiederman this year for other schools. Its a very small group of kids doing the arts.

My sophomore at Einstein says a bunch of their ES friends who went to Loiderman for MS are now in the VAC visual arts magnet at Einstein. So it seems like there was a few years ago, at least. These were apparently the “artsy group” from their CES program.

Is there a sizable cohort of students at Loiederman who are into visual arts in addition to performing arts?

Did you have to proactively apply to LMS? Thank em are in the DCC and didn’t even know about this option.

LMS does't get the "best" as its not a audition in. Its kids who enjoy it and want to be around like minded kids with more options. Some will go on but many will pick other careers. Mine loves the arts but probably will not do it as a career, but fun.

The advantage is you get 8 classes, not 7 and more preforming arts options.

Its a good school, has accelerated math, great principal, but otherwise its no different than any other school.

Sligo is supposed to have a good band director.

Yes - the Sligo band and orchestra are very good. My DS got in to Loiderman but chose Sligo. He did band all three years, plus stage, which he really enjoyed. Going to our home school was the right choice for him since his friends tended to be in our general neighborhood which made getting together socially much easier. Plus the commute up Georgia Ave would have gotten old real fast.

Georgia isn't bad as you are going reverse traffic. But, Sligo has a good reputation for band. Orchestra instructor at LMS is worth commuting for. Same with a few other teachers at LMS depending on what your child wants.

Can’t speak for colleges, but exploring their interests and finding what they like/don’t like is an important pathway. DC is at LMS and we figured middle school is so full of drama anyway- might as well embrace it! They are enjoying learning how to be part of a team for theater as well as understanding the importance of practicing for a big play. Not sure college is on any of these kids’ minds? It’s very a supportive place which suits us just fine.

We talk about college all the time. Depends on the family/child. In MS, some colleges offer music/arts summer experiences to give kids exposure to college level music.

There are pros/cons to Loiederman, just like any other school. The distance can be an issue with the social part if you don't live close by. Transportation is another issue. Some families carpool. They do have an after school free program that helps.
