LOL where on earth did you get this number? Yes, we need to be mindful of lower SES kids, but this number is false. all sources I can find say roughly 1/4.

Seriously. Who are these people who believe that being cold makes you sick? I feel like it's something my grandma (who only went to elementary school during the great depression) would say.

My husband cannot be convinced. He says going out in cold weather without a hat gives him a sinus infection, and warns our 10 year old he'll get sick if hes out in the cold without a hat. Drives me crazy.

My nose runs when I'm outside in cold weather. But it clears up when I warm up.

Yes, it's a stupid policy . When I taught for DCPS I could not believe that we had to keep children inside day after day during "cold spells". The stagnant, hyper, sullen , weird energy buildup was unbelievable. Maybe they are worried kids don't have coats? Seems like a solvable problem with a lending closet . It was terrible .

I thought DCPS had a policy that temps below 40 meant no outdoor recess. Thats a stupid policy. Kids should go out pretty much every day. Through donations, we can make sure all kids have the coats and gloves they need.

Not from being outside. Yes, there are winter seasonal illnesses, but it isn't from literally being cold. That's not how it works.

After two years of covid, you’d think people would understand how diseases are primarily spread: indoors, from people in close contact. Things like colds spread more readily in winter because people spend more time indoors, rather than outside.

Your kids are less likely to get colds during winter if they’re outside skating, sledding and playing in the snow, then if they spend all their time cooped up inside.

How do kids get sick outside?

So do you think that children in colder climates just don't go outside for recess, for months at a time? Come on. In colder climates they go outside MORE because nobody's believing this myth that it makes you sick.

I grew up in Toronto. It was never too cold for kids to go outside for recess and during lunch. Kids aren’t going to get hypothermia or frostbite while running around outside for 15-30 minutes. Fresh air and exercise is good for kids.

People around here are really soft when it comes to cold.
