My ex-H, an ortho surgeon specialist, makes well over $500,000 and did when he was in his early 40s. Doctors have to be more creative nowadays to make big money, but the opportunity is there if they want it.

So the upper endpoint is always going to be people who do procedures, such as surgeries, especially if you get "more creative" in doing them. That makes the lower endpoint is much lower than the average as well. That's going to be your average general practice doctor, or pediatrician, or public health doctor.

I guess they aren't creative enough, PP? Or not willing to be, maybe?

You have to take into account opportunity cost. Residency is low pay at 50-60k for around 7 years after 4 years of medical school which is 60-100k a year depending on where. It’s better to be at engineer and make 100k throughout your 20s. Also, Physician Assistant is great - only 2 years no residency and make anywhere between 100-200 k

We have a surgeon relative who makes bank because he owns his clinic in a low COL area. And his parents paid for his medical school 100%. He also makes unique investments like local businesses and real estate in addition to stock market holdings.

Any speciality with ‘interventional’ in front of it pays pretty well, as does surgical specialities. The rest not so much. Pediatrics is the worst in terms of pay.
