Why is this an issue? My niece got a puppy that she got to name and insisted it was named something similar to her big brother. Think Mike and Mikey. The family kept it. So for the past few years they have a son named Mike and a dog named Mikey.

You should absolutely write her off and make sure those cousins never have contact with your child again. And if you ever come across another animal with that name, be sure to yell at its owners too.

My son named his cat after a friend of his grandma's. When they visit MIL in the summer, the friend always invites them over to swim in her pool. It was a tribute.

When my brother and his wife were separated, she got a dog and named it the same name as my son. My son has a traditional Irish name, not a name given to dogs that I’m aware of, and my SIL is not from Europe or the United States, so it is not a name she would have likely ever come across without having met my son, who was already born and named for many years before she and my brother met. That I thought was odd behavior.
