Because it's idiotic. Only people close to you call you in an emergency your spouse, parents, kids, etc. If your own mother fell down the stairs and tried to reach you would you let her just resort to 911? Nobody does this, it's not even a normal response.

DP. Do you carry the phone with you every time you go to the bathroom just in case someone calls with an emergency while you're peeing?

On a different note, if my mother fell down the stairs and could reach a phone, I hope she would call 911 before calling me, because they're going to be able to help her better than I can. If my mother called me in that situation, all I could do is pull up the number to her local fire department and ask them to send an ambulance to her.

If I try to call my dd and she doesn’t answer, I either try her again a couple of times or call 911. I don’t understand you’re thinking here. She said she calls back if it’s not a telemarketer. MIL then brought up the “what if it’s an emergency card,” and OP reasonably responded that in the case of an emergency, someone will indeed call back a few times, or call 911. I once let a call from my brother go to voicemail when I was in Yellowstone. When he called back two more times quickly, I correctly figured out something big was going on, and called him back. He was calling because my uncle had died.

Same here. My neighbor called me twice one day. I let it go the first time because I was on a zoom call for work. When she rang back again right away I knew something was up and took the call. She needed me to take her preschooler because the nursing home called and said her dad was near the end and she should come as soon as she could. Op gave a pretty rational answer. Not sure what pp is tussling about.
