Women do not see men as people. A woman only views a man in terms of the man's immediate utility to her life - "what is he doing for me right now?" As soon as his utility is zero, he most definitely won't be a person to her any more, just an annoyance.

Based on my brother and his friends, they see certain types of women as people. The stereotypical girly girls, they see as blow-up dolls.

When I was younger, I would have thought it was more like 1%….but then you hear all the stories about the perfectly nice boy in college who is a huge date rapist, or the nice teacher who is molesting kids, or the guy at the office who beats his wife. And that’s on top of all the guys in prison for murder, rape, assault, etc. there just a lot of men out there who don’t have real empathy. Women too., but those numbers are much lower. Or at least they are less likely to act on their lack of empathy in ways that physically hurt other people.

I’ve never met any man who did not think women were people. Seriously that’s bizarre; men are not sociopaths as a class, perhaps they just see the world differently than you do? What, specifically, do you mean when you ask that question?

I think it depends on the man but I don’t think men are socialized to view us as people, and that it takes the purposeful intervention of close individuals to make it happen. A determined mother (or father, but that requires a father who already understands this, which is rare) or a girlfriend or spouse.

I think my DH sees me as a human now but there was a time when I realized he’d either stopped or been faking it, and our marriage hinged on him turning that around. One reason I was committed to making it happen is that we have a daughter. If we didn’t, I’m not sure I would have put in the time. But making sure my DD’s dad is capable of seeing her humanity is worth it even if it’s sucked for me to have to asset and reassert my personhood over and over until he got it.

DH went to therapy, and now can view women as more than sex objects. Some men’s minds are programmed to assess every woman they see as if they were a potential mate. Even on these message boards, most women think it’s natural to check out women. Those women are someone’s sister, mother, friend, or daughter. But we don’t think about that. Only if they’re fukable.
