There is a lot of misinformation on this thread. This kid was not in morningside park. He was simply walking home near morning side park (very close to campus) after a soccer game. He was attacked on the street. The president of Columbia’s email said it was shocking how close to campus this happened.

This is not true, at all. It reached a peak of 47% increase last summer and has been decreasing since. And it is still a much lower rate than it was two decades ago.

I grew up in NYC, lived there as a young adult. Honestly, I’ve never set foot in or right outside Morningside Park. It simply had that reputation.

Sounds like I’m blaming the victims (May they rest in peace). I’m not, just supporting others who say that some students new to NYC may be incredibly brilliant, but not street smart.

Let's see what clues you have. You defunded the police or drastically cut their budget, but did not have impact on the police force on streets. So some police must be working for free? I remember my kid’s NYU friend posting a gofundme page for a classmate who's father passed away. She needed just a semester for graduation. NYU was unforgiving. They insisted on taking the kid’s father's life insurance policy as tuition payment. True story as I understood the gofundme page at the time.

The FA office probably asked about sources of funding and may have inquired about life insurance since a parent passed away. This sounds totally plausible. Why are you so quick to dismiss someone else who was recounting an experience a friend had?

Another former Columbia student here who NEVER set foot in morningside park. The poor kid probably wasn’t aware of its rep.
