OP here. Well. While I was not paying attention, my spouse got on here with this addition, kind of changing the simplicity of my design. All I really wanted was cold cut / lunch meat. But spouse is a cutie, and frankly also HOTđŸ”„, and has added an interesting component to the answers. Thanks, sweetie! Love you❀

NY; Cold cuts. Deli meat sounds alright to me too though. I don't like lunch meat and would have to think for a second what someone meant by that without context.

My DH is from Jersey and his family is hard core camp cold cuts. I think that sounds so snobby.

Fellow Jersey and also Team Cold Cuts.

But, I think it is funny it sounds snobby to you. Since living outside of NJ and hearing only “delt
meats,” I tend to think of “cold cuts” as an old fashioned and lowbrow term 😂.

We use the term deli meat.
And if the person don't understand and ask, I say, you know cold cuts, those lunch meat you put in sandwiches.

Anonymous wrote:I grew up calling it lunch meat (in the Midwest) but married into a cold cut family (DH is German) and now call it cold cuts, or just turkey/ham/etc. Once I started calling it cold cuts, "lunch meat" started to sound kind of gross to me. But that may be because back in the day the kind we ate was either that unnaturally square kind from Oscar Mayer or the stuff with cheese blobs in it, so my association with the phrase isn't the greatest.

It's deli meat and olive loaf/macaroni loaf were delightful, but sadly passé now.

I love a ham and cheese with spicy mustard on a toasted everything bagel.

But why is this a bone of contention in your house?

Ah, yes, OP here. Good question. We have the highest standards for usage in the household and so I want to be correct. Spouse is much smarter than I in this regard, has a strong opinion (but then, darn it so do I!), so I do not want to get it wrong. It has been an active, more or less friendly, debate for some time, and I thought, with a little extra time on my hands this year, why not settle it once and for all? And before it get personal. Like sex, spouse and I want this to be consensual.

And thank for your direct answer!

So your spouse is a jerk. Over the use of how describe meat from
a deli. I’ll hug my spouse tighter tonight.

Deli turkey/ham/roast beef. I don't know why but the phrase "lunch meat" gives me the heebie-jeebies.

We say sandwich meat. Given choice of your two suggestions we would say lunch meat.

Neither. We say “sliced meat for sandwiches”.

Lunch meat during my childhood. Deli meat now. Never cold cuts.
