I do the opposite, I lie and say I have job all the time because I think it gets me more respect.

Some people like to work. My cousin worked as an Asst Superintendent for years (after having been a teacher and then a principal). He retired and the school district threw him a big party. He gets a huge pension so he doesn’t have to work but he hates sitting around doing nothing so he took a couple of interim jobs and then took a part time job as a dean at a private high school for about 30 hours a week. He worked there for about 10-12 years and finally just officially retired in his early 70’s. Why don’t you just ask your sister?

Maybe she did not retire instead she was let go.

Maybe she has no retirement savings and she is embarressed.

Maybe she has to work.

this is common for state and county employees. They really are retired, but picking up extra income working. There's a term for it I can't think of.

She's embarrassed she doesn't have enough money to be really retired OP.

Happened to one of my family friends, had to sell their house and get a job just to break even in retirement.

He is both. He IS retired from the military and he has a real job. Most military retirees go on to have a second career. Military retirement is not enough to actually retire on. But, he did 20 years, retired per military rules and moved on. That is retirement. We have full retirement benefits.
