Clemson has always drawn kids from area privates. I graduated from AHC in the 90s and plenty of private school kids from the dc metro area headed south to Clemson.

Go on any college forum and you'll see that people have been getting decisions for a few weeks now. Schools can give an early response without explicitly having a rolling admissions policy.

Because it's fun and they have a good football team, although not this year though

Clemson has a considerably lower admitted student profile than W&M (from the Common Data Set):
Clemson: Avg. SAT 1210-1400, 56% from top 10% of their graduating class
W&M: Avg SAT 1360-1520, 82% form the top 10% of their graduating class
Tech is more competitive also.

So it's really academically a different type of student--the profile of where they would get into in VA is more like JMU or GMU. So I think going to Clemson sounds better than what would be their more nearby options and seems more fun.
