My MIL loves her Honda CRV and is about to get a new one. Similarly, I have an Acura RDX that I really like. It's time for me to get a new one but I refuse to pay these ridiculous prices right now so I'm riding it out. Like you, I don't really care much about cars. DH has an expensive car but I just need something to get me to work and run errands.

Mazda 3 are AWESOME cars for the price. If you don't care about status and want a solid ride, Mazda 3 is a very good choice for the bang you get for your buck.

Concur new driver should have something old and cheap and tolerant of bumps. Look for a (relatively) low mileage ~2005 Accord or Camry in good shape for the boy.

We test drove a rav4 and found it underwhelming, but it is safe and reliable and meets your suv criteria. We ended up getting an outback, which could also be worth looking at for you.
