The Korean vs. German vs. Japanese vs. American argument doesn’t work anymore. Our Toyota Avalon was nothing but problems from 10k miles out. Doesn’t mean the entire brand makes bad cars. Flip side is our Jeep Cherokee has 180k miles with only minor issues.

That is nice, VW has one of the best bumper to bumper warranty

True, however, once the warranty period is over it'll start costing you $$ do keep it on the road, there is a reason VWs have super high depreciation, at least pre-covid.

VWs used to be really crappily made vehicles.

They still are, but you won't find out until after warranty period is over. Until then, they look, feel and drive better than average cars out there.....

It would depend on the make of the car.

Hyundai’s are not really known for their longevity IMO.
I would expect it to be a PITA after 150+ miles or so.

A Japanese car such as a Subaru, Toyota or Honda I would expect to last longer mileage-wise.
American/Domestic brands > not so much.

I recently had a Ford that at 100,000 miles became a money pit for me so I will never buy Ford™️ again!

My Honda, Toyota and Lexus vehicles never really became a PITA... a few repairs after ~7-8 years, but nothing that was a major or a PITA unlike the above.

This is why we simply won't buy American anymore - sadly.

My 14 year old Saab has been super reliable and very inexpensive to maintain so I'll buy only Swedish.............oh, wait!

They dropped the longer warranty anyway. It’s back to 3/36.

If someone likes their car and have the money then why should it matter how much they spend on repairs? It's their money their choice.

A few years ago, mid 2006, I had a 1999 Chevy Malibu. The engine needed to be replaced. Friends of mine repeatedly told me to replace the car and that it was time for a new one. I ignored them all as I didn't want any car payments and found a mechanic to replace the engine for $1500. I got another 9 good years out of that car.

This is always such a tough question. I had a GMC (about 6 years old, 110k mileage) that required 5K repairs over a 2 year period - transmission went, plus a couple of other things. I was seriously thinking about getting rid of it, but it ended up being good to go for another 5 years/50k miles, without any additional major expenditures. However, somewhere around 160k miles, numerous problems were cropping up and I could tell that it was going to be $$$ to keep that car on the road for much longer. At that point, I didn't have any doubts about getting rid of it.

But it turned out that the $5k at year 6/7 was a pretty good investment - I definitely got an additional $5k of use out of that car!

I had an ‘04 Honda Civic. Every independent mechanic I’ve ever dealt on that car with has been either incompetent, wouldn’t touch the thing, went back to the dealer for everything, or had a lag time of days to get it fixed.
