Isn’t it crazy though that it’s impossible to figure out how much this will cost? “Apply widely” is expensive!

Presidential 32-36 ACT or 1420-1600 SAT 3.50+ $28,000

Out of state tuition, room and board comes to: $45,000

so 45000-28000= $17,000 cost of attendance to live and study there, if you are a high stat student.

I would rather stick with UMD than paying 17k to attend University of Alabama ..

Apply widely. Stop thinking you can anticipate this. DD's merit aid ranged from 0 at most to several thousand to 1/2 tuition. I thought 720 math SAT might have mattered with an interest in pre-health majors. I think it's pretty random though - who happens to look at the application. If it happens to get someone's attention. If it happens to get bumped-up to someone more senior for special consideration.

Apply widely. Don't fall in love which any one school, not before final cost-of-attendance is known.

University of Miami in Ohio offers merit scholarships based on GPA (which they calculate based on their formula). https://www.miamioh.edu/admission/merit-scholarships/

Where?

Any college within commuting distance. Where do you live?

Commuting should be a possible consideration. OP, plan on room and board at around 15k/yr.

OP, so out of 22k, minus room and board, you'd have 7k, plus your student's 5k federal loan = 12k for tuition. Your student would need to work summers, at a minimum, for books and spending money.

What state is OP in?
