Traditional etiquette rules exist to make others feel welcome and considered. Having big family pictures up is braggy and implies to guests you have lots of fun experiences that don't include them. This is an old WASP mentality, all those old rules come from that principle. People don't really follow them anymore. Like not using certain words.

I think the original intent was to avoid being "braggy" about your family members.

I don't care if it's tacky or not. I love seeing the big picture of our kids that hangs on the wall of one of our downstairs rooms. It makes me smile every time I turn the corner and see it. I bet it still makes me smile in 20 years, wherever it may hang then.

Why would I care what anyone (other than my spouse) thinks about our wall decorations if it makes us happy in our home?

Nope. My mom creeped me out for the the large portraits of me around the house. Now that she passed away I have to figure out what to do with them.

Just get smaller portraits, like 8×10 and it won't be so creepy.

I got my parents a large family photo... it never got displayed. Smaller is better, IMO. We have tons of photos of the family and the kids - smaller moments done with frames or mixtiles.

All I could think of when you asked this question was the portrait from Schitt's Creek, so I guess I'll let you extrapolate from there.

Depends on where it’s hung. Photo nook off an upstairs hallway: ok. Over the living room fireplace: not ok.

This is why I'd call it "clichéd," not tacky. It's fine. It's not original -- that's why it's referenced in film, etc. -- but there is nothing wrong with that. A lot of things aren't original but are perfectly fine.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen any in real life, but when I see these in TV or movies, it’s always the rich people with giant family portraits or paintings.

This was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread earlier today!

Obviously there is no one answer to this. Everyone in my husbands country of origin has a giant posed family photo on their living room wall. No one in my white lower class family does. I would never take note of either the presence or absence of a giant family photo at someone else’s house, so decorate according to your own taste.
