$100K is not that much money to throw your child’s life away.

Hmmm, PhD in Anthropology, valued educator at an elite private school presumably with her own child enrolled there. What could have made Diana Toebe be so stupid as to completely blow up her own life like this?
Agreed. They also asked for peanuts in terms of money. This is ideology driven. Will be interesting to see their internet history.

They are all over the mother’s social media, including the eldest child’s gender transition. These kids are about to go through one of the toughest phases of life without their parents and under a spotlight of the nation media.
I guarantee there is so much more to this story. What in the world were the parents thinking leaving their kids to the wolves? I wonder if the parents are narcissists who believed they never would be caught.

One theory I saw was that it’s France, they cooperated with the investigation, and that’s why they were so pissed off about the Australian deal.
France is an ally. I believe this idiot was stupid enough to hand it off to Russians, or try to, like that girl who stole Nancy Pelosi's laptop during the Jan. 6th riots.
The court papers say that in December 2020, an FBI official received a package that had been sent to the foreign country containing U.S. Navy documents, a letter and instructions for how to conduct encrypted communications with the person offering the information.
The letter in the package said: “I apologize for this poor translation into your language. Please forward this letter to your military intelligence agency. I believe this information will be of great value to your nation. This is not a hoax.”
It’s not Russia or China. The foreign country handed the package over to an FBI legal attaché in that country, which neither China nor Russia would do. The FBI also got assistance from the country’s embassy here, which neither Russia nor China would do.
Fascinating. Probably Israel.

But why send it to France in the first place? Seems more likely to be a country that’s not someone we would think of as a close ally but that’s close enough to turn him over to us.
That country didn't turn him over. The idiot sent the package to an undercover U.S. FBI agent by mistake. Presumably someone with embassy connections or connected to it in some way.

I hope your experts are very happy with the sample provided and I understand the importance of a small exchange to grow our trust. Most of the material Ipossess is similar in format — multz~le pages per sheet. Drafted drawings are split over several regular sheets to preserve good detail. And I used color where it seemed important — like graphs with several lines. I expect your new communication instructions will be just as clear and safe as your drop instructions. However, I suggest you continue to monitor your Proton until I am able to establish contact with your new method. If there is a problem, I will use it to request help. All of my previous emails have been signed: Yours truly, Alice Ifit is ever necessary to Proton you again, I will end the email with Sincerely, Alice instead to assure you the message is from me and that Jam not under duress. For now, I propose we continue with weekend exchanges at suitable parks and trails, similar to this one. Details of my daily routine may narrow an investigator's search too much of your organization is infiltrated by an adversary one day. Hiking and visiting historical sites is easier to explain than unexpected stops during rush hour if they ever take a special interest in me. we are to continue using this method of exchange long term, it is very important that I have as much flexibility in timing my deliveries as possible. I would like to create a natural legendfor my interest in visiting a particular place in the future — reading articles about ten fun things to do in Baltimore this month and 'stumbling' across a beautiful hike close to home, for example. Bad weather on one day might ruin that cover story. I hope you will forgive my excess caution. I want our relationship to be very successful for us both, and that means that I must be very careful at every step.
Yours truly,

$100K might have been just the first pay-off request. I believe they initially handed over proof of knowledge for $10K.

Okay, so maybe a country that is 'lower' tier on the global scale but feels like I could get more from cooperating from the U.S. than in screwing it over? Korea? Maybe France could be right. But the traitor asked for the country to be prepared to get him and his wife out of the country in case they were discovered which would at least indicate there's no extradition let alone a ally that is super-interwoven with the U.S. in a NATO alliance.
An extradition treaty doesn’t mean the other country could be forced to extradite him, although it would be a big breach of foreign relations in this case. This guy made some pretty dumb mistakes in this whole affair, though, so I don’t know that he was thinking too hard about extradition treaties.
According to sources it was CHINA.

They plotted this for years. I bet the social media posts were part of it.
