Has the county been actively reducing the policing around the Shelton? I'm not one of those people who think policing is the solution to every problem, but there seems to have been an uptick in incidents over the past year and I'm wondering if this is the result of any changes to ACPD policy.

But if you say that out loud then you can't put one of those yard signs up about we love everyone! But at the same time, you are ok saying, well this only happens to "those" kind of people who live in "that" type of housing. Don't you care about the families living there? The ones who can't afford anything else? The ones who have their children growing up with fear of being shot? They don't matter right? Because the violence only happens on their doorstep and you are safely cocooned.

Pointing out that neighborhood dynamics and boundaries are complex does not mean that someone doesn't care about the areas of the neighborhood that are suffering from this. She mentioned it is unacceptable and alarming. Those of us that live here have spent all of our time living here having to listen to folks mention that they are afraid to come visit because of where we live. Pointing out that the neighborhood HAS changed (but not completely) is not wrong. It doesn't mean anyone is ignoring that problems it still has. It certainly doesn't mean that those of us that live a bit away from the Shelton aren't concerned or aren't trying to change things.

I am going to assume you are the poster from earlier (since you keep ranting about liberals and liberal ideals and signage). You do not live here. You do not understand the push back from certain organizations within the neighborhood to change and address the problems within that area. You do not understand how often this stuff is brought to the county and to the police and they refuse to do anything. You refuse to listen to any of the actual work anyone is doing to fix the issue and instead just rant from your computer about people having signs in their yards and not actually caring about anything and then demand APS/county. Maybe you should take a look at yourself.

Yes, I agree with this. We live on the other side of Drew and VERY rarely hear the shots but otherwise are largely oblivious to what goes on down there. I honestly love the part of the neighborhood I live in, but i feel for the folks that live closer to the Shelton.

Is there much police presence there at night? We need to get rid of AH.

Honestly, I haven't been down there at night for a while. Last time we during the summer after a shots fired incident and the police were there, but I am not sure how long they stayed. The shots fired this weekend there was a cop car a few streets over (Not sure what he was there for though). They do not patrol the streets like they used to (as in they used to frequently drive up and down all of the streets looking for trouble). That was years ago though and they no longer do that. The crime is much more concentrated now IMO .

Shots happen in all areas of Arlington, some places seem to have a brighter spotlight right now. (This is speaking as someone who lives in N. Arlington who called in shots fired three weeks ago and never saw anything reported to the public about it.

There was a large crowd gathered down there last night--appeared to be about 100 people with lots of cars parked illegally. The County Board has to act and put pressure on AHC, whomever, and get it together.

Not sure what walkable schools has to do with it. I don't think the elementary school children are the issue. That area would still be a problem no matter who you zone to the school.

The fundamental issue is that concentrated poverty is not a good idea.

I think this is the main issue. You are asking the county or APS to fix 60 plus years of neighbor dynamics (if not many more years). The county won't even tow illegally parked construction vehicles or fix broken signs in GV.

Living here problematic areas seem to change when people die, move or are arrested. The police are walking a VERY fine line regarding over policing but when the police used to regularly patrol the area I dont think things were better (maybe there were more arrests). I would love the county to provide some conflict/anger management sessions in Friday and Saturday nights. Maybe also procide/offer job counseling or vocational classes to the young folks down there. Oh and addiction counseling and help and support. But none of that will actually happen.

The county probably won't change parking or put in more lighting either

But the neighborhood fought very hard to get a neighborhood school there, they can't close it. They won't close the AFH but are building 900k townhomes next-door. It will gentrify eventually I imagine. I assume the county is waiting in that.

What is the AFH?

God I hope it gentrifies sooner than later. This crap needs to stop. If people can’t behave, have them move out to Woodbridge.

AFH= affordable housing.

Arlington needs to stop worrying so much about affordable housing. There are other places to live.
