One example - DC is in 11th grade SMCS. The kids form small teams of about 3-4 students. They interview organizations that work with persons with disabilities to find their partner. Then they work with that partner to develop a solution for the organization or their clients. DC’s team’s partner employs persons with disabilities and the team is helping them modify a piece of equipment to be more accessible for the employees.

SMCS is the best curriculum and best magnet program in Montgomery County for the RIGHT student. If your kid is the right student, you know. Winning/losing math competitions doesn’t really mean anything… especially at HS level.

My DD is in global, started this year and gloats about how SMACS and Humanities kids are jealous of how much fun Global kids get to have. Last couple weeks they have been cooking cultural dishes and sharing in the class room as a project and her homework has things like "sit in your quite spot in nature for 15 minutes! " ... well even I am jealous of my daughter , I don't remember school being so much fun ever! Coming from Math Sci in Middle school, which was a lot of work, this has been a breath of fresh air for her. AND she gets time for sports and other extra curricular as well.
But at the same time the rigor is good too and they do have to make up for all the class work they loose during the field trips! But haven't heard her complain about that at all, she is used to hard work from middle school anyway.

My kid stays up to 1 or 2 am routinely, but it has nothing to do with too much work!

GE program is what an ideal HS should be like - unique combination of rigor and outdoor activities. SMACS from PHS/Blair and RMIB kids probably test better though if that's important to you.

I’m glad your daughter enjoys the SMACS program so far. To OP, each program has its pros and cons though. I think the field trips are sometimes burdensome especially when you have so many assignments and have to miss classes and make them up later. etc. If you take challenging classes (yes you can take them like SMACS), you have to work really hard. But compared with SMACS, Global offers more options I think. If you have favorite extracurricular activities, SMACS 8th period makes your life very hard.

PP I would definitely argue against Global kids having it easy. My straight A 9th grader (first marking period) worked very hard for his grades often up at 1-2 am.
