I was hiring for a new position a few months ago and had two resumes that explained the gap. In essence, but more eloquently:

March 2024 - March 2025 Caring for sick family member...

January 2024 - March 2025 - Laid off and took time to find the right fit...

From a resume perspective, a year is easy to hide. I don't even have months on my resume, just years. So, let's say you quit today, you can list you current job as 202x-2026. And then even if you don't start working until December, it doesn't look like there is a gap. I've never had anyone question it.

Now, you will have to be more accurate on an application but in my industry, once you get to that point, its a formality. Other industries may vary.

Make up a story about traveling the world for your honeymoon

I think up to 6-8 months is normal. Maybe have a little bit of a story - I was job hunting but also doing x and y. It doesn’t have to be earth shattering. When you’re closing in on a year+, it’s still okay but beef up your story.

And caring for kids, sick relatives, your deceased parents estate, etc., is a story for both men and women.
