Doesn't he have one family member who's an officer in another state? Could that really be how he's getting off? I would think local cops and FBI really don't care.

No way. His parents gave a fake date of when he went camping and seem pretty relaxed. If they were truly worried he were dead they wouldn’t have done either of those things. And he had weeks to kill himself and did not.
