Was June looking at the dead baby some sort of political statement from the show writers?

This season has been terrible. I used to look forward to wednesdays when a new episode came out and now I'm like ugh, fine, let's do this. I read the novel back in 1989 as a high school student and to say that it left a lasting impression is an understatement. Obviously this is just a television show but still, it's so disappointing to see what they've done with the story. Bad job, writers.

Same. The aunt Lydia background story was beyond lame. Is that really the best the writers could do? Makes absolutely no sense. I can think of a bunch of other stories that would have been a better fit, and I’m not a very creative person.

My comments/predictions:

- Nick: puzzling. I think he's like Serena. Was bought-in, but became disenchanted much more quickly than she is experiencing a buy-out. I think we'll see a more awful side of him later this season. I also think that for June to be happy/whole again, he has to die so that she can raise Hannah and Nichole with Luke without another father-figure distraction. I think June will end up killing Nick somehow, in self-defense, or in defense of Nichole, or perhaps he sacrifices himself for the good of his daughter (see: "How many chances do you think you'll get to be a father?" -- I think this might be one of them).

This is an interesting theory. I can see June killing him once she realizes how deep he is a part of it.

- Serena: 100% she'll end up with the cute dad from Parenthood. It'll be a shitshow, and she'll betray him by continuing to help with or communicate with Gilead, but it'll happen.

- Handmaids stapled mouths: JESUS. I guess that's a way to keep them quiet and compliant but how truly disturbing that was. I don't understand why that's a regional choice - seems like they'd all be doing it across Gilead? I am still not convinced they all have it though.

This seems like the most far fetched. If handmaid's are the blessed ones because they are fertile, they wouldn't do anything to sacrifice their health, or the health of the baby (aside from removing modern medicine and forcing homebirths). At very most they would remove a tongue so that they can't speak.

Is the new book covering Season 2/3, or is it separate new material?

My take on dragging the wounded woman out of the store was that the security guys are just so calloused that a person they shot is no more to them than an animal carcass blocking a lane of traffic; steps to save her might have begun once they got her to the gutter and somebody higher up/more worried about getting in trouble over shooting a pregnant handmaid saw that she was still breathing.

I don’t agree with where they went with it (her going bananas) but I thought the thing with June calling out of Matthew was a good scene between June and Lydia - basically June is proving that no one can sincerely stick to the Gilead standard - even true believers will fall short all the time - so only fakers are successful there. But Lydia basically calls her bluff. Of course, in that sense you could say the grocery store is Lydia’s fault.

Yeah but do you drag shot people for medical care when the threat is gone? I would argue they would start first aid where she lay.

Because they want to hide anything bad that happens to keep their happy world. Much of the new stuff doesn't make sense. I don't get how they do the mouth rings as wouldn't it rip through the skin if someone opens their mouth enough times, like and earring could. How do they eat?

I’m officially done watching. June is increasingly unlikable—feeling justified in any behavior bc of her grief. The plot lines are dramatic and far fetched and never actually go anywhere (June’s getting out—no she’s staying) (Nicole got out—no, now as wants her back) (Nick can help save a Nicole—no, now she’s bad too). I feel like this show is dragging me along and I’m over it.
