I have no dog in this fight, as my DS does not have the stats to be admitted.

However, at $57,000, the tuition does not seem super high to me. Most private schools in the DC area cost $45,000 per year for Upper School.

I know 3 young adults who have attended Middlebury over the past 10 years. They are all really humble and nice people, in addition to being really smart. One of them is at Harvard Law School now, one of them is a teacher and coach at a DC private, and one of them is a current student. If these 3 are any indication of the quality of the student body at Middlebury, it would seem pretty great to me.

To the PP whose child just got in, congrats! It’s a great school. 99% of the people posting here don’t know what they are talking about.
I’m a Middlebury grad and loved my time there. My classmates are very successful and anyone making a low salary is doing so by choice.

There’s definitely some virulent anti-SLAC people here and anti private college folks as well. Read the other thread on the benefits of LACs/SLACs and you’ll feel better about Middlebury.

One last thing, the Charles Murray incident was totally uncharacteristic of the school. There’s definitely more racial awareness on campus, which is good because the school has long been thought if a place exclusively for rich white kids. Not saying what they did was good, just that I am glad there is more diversity.

OP I think your values are off and you likely wouldn’t appreciate a middlebury education. I went to a competitor and worked in I-banking in ny. We loved middlebury (and all the Slac) grads bc they had good work ethics, were organized, had great stamina, social skills and the ability to learn anything and truly grasp it vs memorizing things. I’d take a middlebury grad any day over someone from a big school who had great stats on paper. I found those kids were used to just studying to the test and memorizing. They flailed in front of clients and didn’t have the social skills needed. The SLAC were used to defending themselves in small classes which translated well to work. Now since you seem concerned only about the bottom line, when I retired we were hiring starting analysts at $65k with a $20k sign on bonus and a three tier bonus system that went up to $60k the first year. Not bad for a 21 year old.

Or at least learn the facts rather than wallow in ignorance.
