And, more from Florida:
“In recent years in Florida, we have seen a “purge” of suspected non-citizens from the voter rolls that was abandoned by most counties as unreliable. We endured limits on early voting days and hours, later rescinded after a nationwide outcry, and an illegal ban on early voting by students on campuses that was lifted by a court, and more.
Now there’s a move to mobilize an army of poll watchers in the first major election in which felons can vote in Florida. It comes as Amendment 4 remains tangled up in court, while an appeal demanded by Gov. Ron DeSantis discourages felons from voting while prolonging the uncertainty over whether they must first pay all court costs.
So what will they think in some rural county when a busload of poll watchers arrives from Jacksonville or Miami, just to keep an eye on things?
Everyone wants transparency in elections. But filling local fire stations and churches with faraway poll watchers is not transparency. It’s voter intimidation. The last thing we need in Florida are roving bands of partisans masquerading as voting experts.
No one is pushing for this change except Republican legislators. They’re the ones who need watching, not the voters filling out their ballots.”
