No, I'm doing quite well for myself, but thank you. I don't think he's a bad person, of course, and my comment wasn't intended to disparage his personal or professional life. I just happen to find his particular brand of liberalism gratuitous.

I support this wholeheartedly. I voted for Marshall and Johns, but would be happy with Peace Valley if that is more palatable to the keepers than Marshall or Johns. As far as I'm concerned, this isn't about getting a specific name or type of name, it's about no longer honoring someone who fought to keep slavery, and also saying that the school board's decision in 1958 to actively participate in the active resistance movement by calling the school JEB Stuart HS instead of Munson Hill HS was wrong. If Peace Valley helps to lessen the rift between the two sides, that's a good choice. Hopefully the board will consider this when they pick a name.

Translation: it's fine to have lots of schools named after white men, but not blacks or Hispanics. That would just be SO divisive.

If by obnoxious you mean standing up for what is morally right, then I'm sure he'll gladly accept that label.

Mostly optional expenses. If parents and boosters feel so put out they won't pay. I have a feeling many will happily write a big old check. And they don't have to change the school colors, so unless the "decorations" included a life sized portrait of dear Jeb, I think you're good.

And no, the money theoretically being spent on this was never going to address class size. Your concern trolling is so touching.

Booster clubs---lots of things will need replacing which are purchased with money from booster clubs. Stuart just purchased some items through boosters that were quite expensive. In fact, I think a lot of the turf was paid for by boosters. I understand FCPS is picking up the tab on that.
So, boosters will be hitting up the parents for more. And, some of the booster parents have indicated that, as hard as they have worked for the school, they are not willing to start over.
New booster clubs will have to be formed due to the change in name. Did you watch any of the SB meetings? This was presented. It is a legal issue, I think. Setting up things requires huge amounts of time on the part of parents and there are likely additional expenses with this. New items will have to be purchased, new logos (licensing, etc.) etc.etc.

If colors and logo change that will mean additional changes. New uniforms, costumes, etc. Decorations that are reused every year. Lots of things that you never considered.

And, once more, taxpayer money spent without improvement in learning.

With Scott Brabrand recommending four names to the School Board in addition to "Stuart," it's now clear it's not going to be the "new" name, not that it would ever be understood as anything other than JEB Stuart in search of his initials.

It will not be Stuart because 80 percent of the people who voted didn't want to keep it Stuart, not because of McElveen. If anyone is to blame it's the keepers who stayed home instead of voting, even with Stuart on the ballot. Also, the motion that the board voted for proposed Stuart hoping the community would get behind it, and only 18 percent of those who showed up chose to get behind it, despite the board's plea for the community to do so. I really don't think you can blame Brabrand for dodging, he really didn't have a choice given the numbers.

Why are you making this about Ryan McElveen, rather than Stuart?

Clearly, McElveen understood that the motion that he voted for provided both the Superintendent and the School Board with the flexibility reflected in Scott Brabrand's recommendation.
