I didn't know if I was awake or asleep. I thought maybe asleep and all of a sudden it *terrified* me to think anything scary could pop up, and yet I felt all the reality of being so awake. I must have just been dreaming about dinosaurs (thanks Jurassic park), and I was so afraid they would show up. Full of straight up fear of dinosaurs. It sounds silly, but even if you as an adult really felt that, you'd be scared out of your mind. Again, no one was home so I was even more afraid. I ran back inside and 'woke up.' I hid that book somewhere because i never wanted to find it again. Creepily I could never find it, even though I wanted to a few years later. I have no idea why I wanted to hide it, persay, or where I put it.
Fast forward to several years ago and I heard of lucid dreaming. I think that's what was happening. It was a scary feeling at my age.
I'll add: when Newtown happened, I heard about Lanza being interested I lucid dreaming. I think the news mentioned it but not much was made of it. However, I knew my young experience, and I knew the strange feeling it can cause. My heart breaks for all involved, and I just want to say that if believe if lucid dreaming was related somehow.
I heard something about navy yard too, and it pricked my ear. (And I'm sorry if anyone you know was affected in that.) I don't bring these up to politicize or to hurt. Just found a connection to my experience in those events, and many people missed that detail, but I sure noticed.

I hit the garage button on my way inside the house. Saw it go down. Sat down and thought I heard the door go up. I just kind of let it go. Later after dark I went out to check and the door was up. I hit the button again, watched it go down. Went inside, waited, it went up again.![]()
My husband checked to make sure nothing was blocking the light at the bottom, nothing on the door rubber, hit the button, watched it go down. Checked before I went to bed, it was down. Got up at 3 am to use the bathroom, damn door was up ! WTF ? I put it down, husband said it was down when he got up.
I have no idea what that was about but it scared me because I knew someone that was assaulted and robbed in her home via an unlocked garage door.
I am obsessed with safety.
Never had this happen before. I'm thinking tonight I will manually unlatch the lever.
This is actually not an that uncommon of thing. Sounds like someone else who lives nearby has a garage door opener that is on your same frequency. So when they push their garage door opener button, your garage door mechanism will activate. It's happened to us before![]()

I always got the creeps and slept with the covers over my head. I felt a hand grip my leg and squeeze tightly. I loudly said "Ok, I'll stop reading cut it out!" I thought it was my sister or mom that snuck in my room. Instead of letting go they squeezed more tightly. I rolled my eyes and threw back the covers to find no one. The door was heavy and made noise if you opened and closed it, but it was still shut and locked (i was a tween and locked my door at night to avoid my sisters jumping on me to wake me up). You could see if the door was locked from the bed. I was so freaked out I ran to my sisters' rooms to see if they had somehow grabbed my leg, but they were both sound asleep. My parents were also sound asleep. I turned on every light in the house and no one else was there. I was then extremely afraid.
The next morning I told our housekeeper who told me that the house was supposedly haunted by the spirit of a man who had been murdered after one of his employees discovered he had molested their daughter. The house and grounds were gorgeous but I never felt comfortable there again. I was not sorry when my parents sold the place a few years ago and never stayed there by myself.
I don't want to rain on your spooky story parade (it's probably true!) but that also sounds like it could have been a brief episode of sleep paralysis. It happened to me once and I felt a very strong pressure on my chest, couldn't move, and "felt"/mentally saw a terrible witch sneaking up behind me in my bed.
Not oP, but if you read through it, you'll notice she wasn't even asleep in the first place, for this to be sleep paralysis
I second sleep paralysis/night terror. You feel like you're fully awake, but you're actually not. And the room, surroundings, body position, etc is the same in both dream and reality. They're really unsettling experiences.
