Can't speak for Sidwell, but as a legacy & member the club but whose family has NEVER made the "country club" set a priority, I appreciate the diversity at the Cathedral schools. My kids are in the lower school at NCS & STA (and they previously went to beauvoir), One recent trend which I find refreshing and the opposite of "social climbing," NOT ONE of ds & dd's classmates are enrolled in the "invitation only" Mrs. Simpson's, but instead opted for the all-inclusive Capital Cotillion. I know I chose Cotillion over Mrs. Simpson's. From what I've heard the stonewalling of Mrs. Simpson's is quite new. Even a few years back, there would be a handful of students in each grade who attended to Mrs. Simpson's... in this year's 4th grade there are none (ZERO) Cathedral students at Mrs. Simpsons. We felt uncomfortable with the idea of sending dc to a dancing school where not all of his/her classmates were welcome. Take that social climbers!

Wow you are quite the warrior for social change. How courageous to pick a "more inclusive" finishing school for your privileged cc club kids. Sorry for the snark- but really- are you serious??!! Do you understand your club has a VERY recent history of excluding black and Jews as does the Cotillion tradition? Bleck.

I don't think anyone on here is anti-clubs. They are replying to the op about a particular club and answering her/his question candidly. All clubs don't discriminate but the one op asked about has a history of doing so and apparently according to some they are still doing it but more secretly. Instead of being on here and being so defensive why don't you go play some golf?

Have you read the thread? There is a loud and vocal contingent who is very anti-club.

NP. There is a crowd of anti-cc people. I am one. My parents are members and I grew up in one. I hate them and think less of people who join them.

You were at a subpar club and didn't do the sports? Anyone in a nice club with fine dining and great tennis/golf/swimming appreciates and enjoys the experience. How can you not? I think you haven't really experienced it at a nice place.

To be honest, in regards to this thread and all the ill-informed nasty holier-than-thou liberal comments, I think it's funny that Obama joined Columbia. Columbia is traditionally a Catholic club, although times have changed, it continues to be very Catholic heavy and, as a result, more conservative politically than Chevy Chase Club (not to mention all the nasty Catholic haters must be dumb founded now as well). This is a perfect example of how times have changed and people become members of a club that they have lots of good true friends at - that is what plays a significant role in who is a perfect candidate (to answer an earlier question). It's not the color of your skin, your religion, your political leanings, instead it's a desire to join the club, an ability to pay, and having lots of good friends who are members (strong enough that they will take the time to write a letter in support of your membership). That's it!

You, my friend, are making the liberals' points for them. It takes being a former President for an AA to have the social connections to even initiate the process. An exaggerated point, I admit, but using an outlier to support your case is feeble. Plenty of affluent AA families in the DC area. Plenty of Black golfers in the area. Plenty of nice families in the area. Plenty of nice, AA, Catholic families in the area. A bit of introspection might do you some good.
