And fwiw I'm an IB parent and I have never felt hostility from any Hardy families or faculty in the slightest. We are choosing not to send our current 5th grader to Hardy next year, but bc we don't think its the right school for our child, not bc of some hostility that I haven't felt.

Except these things are actually being said. Have you read the 100+ page threads on how the only way to make the school acceptable is to reduce the number of OOB kids? Have you read the posts that say the uniforms make Hardy appear to be a ghetto school? Have you read the many, many posts saying that current Hardy parents don't care about improving the school? Those aren't vaguely implied or hinted at - they are all put out there in the open. And they are an insult to the current Hardy parents.

What is an IB? Being a parent seems like a pain.

As a Hardy parent from the mid-2000s, I don't think they existed back then either. Yes, there was a short period of time where there was resentment over the unjust removal of Principal Pope but that was an individual event (and if your highly regarded principal had been removed without warning from your school you would have been pissed too). I don't recall any parents going on about fear of IB students attending or the desire to keep IB families out. Seriously, what do y'all think we were doing back then at PTA meetings? Trying to organize the International Night, not worrying about IB families.

I am defensive at this point, yes. But I'm eager to assess the validity and legitimacy of complaints about Hardy. Some are valid and legitimate. But others are not. For example, complaints that date back to the 2010 period, which was four Principals ago, have little legitimacy. Complaints that boil down to "Somebody told me something bad about Hardy" also do not have legitimacy. Complaints that are "I want to Hardy on or about this [recent] date, and saw X, Y, and Z that concern me" may well have legitimacy. "It just wasn't the place anyone wanted to drop their kid off to be 'educated'" means little without some context as to why.

I should also add that I am an IB parent with a former Hardy student who thrived there. So I know a bit about how to assess the validity of the complaints.

Lets just move forward with taking over the school, as is already happening with increased IB enrollment in 6th grade this year. Just a few more IBs next year and it's basically done. The OOB/IBs from feeder schools will continue to welcome us, as these kids are already friends and classmates. Any current OOB Hardy parents who are hysterical to the point of embellishing anonymous board posts, at the prospect of "snowflakes" invading their precious vacation home on the west, will simply graduate away.

Councilmember Mary Cheh has monthly office hours around Ward 3. IB parents should go and tell her they support her proposal for a new middle school west of Rock Creek Park.

I don't understand how this threads degenerate. I was serious. For me, this type of reaponses from supossed Hardy's parents is what really make me question about a potential fit of our family with the school.

Different poster here. Really, you'd make your decision about sending your kid to Hardy based on the tone of the responses you read on DCUM? You have no idea whether the people posting here are even representative of the IB and OOB families. As far as I can see in the exchange above, there are some misunderstandings present that often occur in social media exchanges. In my book, that's not a sufficient reason for deciding whether to send your kid to Hardy or not. But, hey, do what works for you.

Another valid point. I do not base my decision on DCUM. I "analyze" DCCAS scores, IB/OOB rates, Great Schools ratings, etc.... Then, I follow threads like this one, and sometimes, they signal something, they give me warnings. I don't know if the poster you are referring to is actually a parent or not, but what would be the purpose to fake it? and to fake being so offended? Even thought, this thread is not by any means a representative sample of anything, but yes, I take it into account It might point me out things I may want to consider, such as how is the parent community like, how does the PAC deal with disagreement, and so on.... And yes, at the end of the day it is a very personal choice.
