It’s not a DC problem. It’s a societal problem. Kids (yes I consider 13,14,15 year olds kids) out all hours. I am tired of hearing “but it’s summer.” No accountability. No parenting. This spans all races and socioeconomic groups.

If we don’t guide children and teens someone else will and now it will be the worst option, federal government.

DC resident but newer, only 25 years, here. Crime went up during Covid. The data doesn’t support your statement that it is high now. It has come down a lot. As with all cities, it also depends what neighborhood you are in. I’m not Pollyanna about crime. I live in a quiet neighborhood that doesn’t see much crime beyond porch pirates and loose change stolen from cars. But I’m sure Ward 7 and 8 see more crime. Again the crime stats don’t support your claim!

Those are your feelings, not the facts because they don’t bear that out. I think it’s asinine to say that Dems don’t care about crime or the unhoused. But, a brutalistic felon isn’t the person to fix it. But, you knew that.

I’m like you, and I agree with you.

This is not a bad thing. It is very telling and sad there are so many people responding here who are against these common-sense measures.

BTW, I live inside the beltway but we have largely avoided DC, especially certain parts and especially after dark.

Because it's going to be performative and short-lived. He can't keep the national guard in DC 365 days a year indefinitely. And these shows of force are not going to address the multiple underlying causes that produce teen criminals--or any criminals--in the first place. I don't know what could--but this isn't it.

Also, this flexing of federal power--always aimed at blue cities--is aimed at pleasing his base and possibly exploring how much force he can wield in the future to further consolidate his power. It flies in the face of all the the GOP has preached for decades about the supremacy of "states rights." It also fuels the narrative that helped bring him into office--that America is under siege by urban criminals of color (as well as undocumented migrants) and only he can fix it.

He is deploying troops in a US city. This is a needless and baseless federal takeover so that he can build his little fortress. People of DC do not want this. There are myriad reasons why it’s bad.


He is also restricting your freedom of movement, which is your right as an American. You can’t just decide that you don’t like someone and arrest them and ship them off to some homeless internment camp.

Truly the worst part is that they are probably relying on ICE, who they scraped from the bottom of the barrel, to make these calls.

FFS I’d be thrilled if 8th graders were afraid of coming to DC so we could use the mall in the spring without awkward pimple faced gangs roaming around. Alas, they keep coming.

If you don’t want people shot, the answer is gun control. Senator McCain weakened a voter referendum in gun control, so if an intern was shot, it’s on the GOP.

There are porch pirates, so I think it’s probably too dangerous for you to come here.
