I was listening to the brother being interviewed on the radio earlier today, which led me to read about the story online. I had not really previously been aware of it.
I don’t know if I’ll be able to stomach watching the Netflix show but it sounds gut wrenching no matter what. The family is still holding out hope for closure of some kind.
DP: Why would it be wrenching to watch? Its not real footage. Its a spin on what the family think happened.
Most likely she fell off, thinking she was going into the bathroom or something. Remember that she had been drinking all night until about 4am. Its odd that her brother left her alone in the bar and came back to the room without her. Then they hung out on the balcony until 5ish am and AGAIN he left her out there? I cannot imagine leaving my drunk sibling on a cruise ship balcony alone.
That is a misrepresentation of what happened. She had had six beers across like 11 hours. And she was the older of the siblings.
6 beers for a woman is a lot. It doesn't matter how old she is or if she's older. You don't leave a drunk person on a balcony alone on a cruise ship.
“Over 11 hours” is a key part of the picture.

Just watched it. I think she fell too. She sounds like she drank a lot as a rule and she was out late drinking, in a relatively strange location and got disoriented. It’s sort of an intriguing story but like a lot of these things, not much to the mystery.
You watched it and your take away was she fell. Even though the FBI confirmed that was likely her in the escort photos and there were all those witnesses?

Yes, the boat was in canal, but the overnight timeline is unclear. Stories have changed over the years, times have shifted. If she went overboard earlier than they are now saying is possible (after the father saw her legs), then the boat could have been further out in the ocean. How much further, I don’t know.

I do not think for one second that her family is responsible for pushing her overboard physically. But I do think their denial of her life choices is perhaps what pushed her to jump.
I knew a young woman who killed herself and in the lead up to it, you would not have guessed. She'd passed through a period of depression and hospitalization and went into a zone where she seemed happy and carefree. And that was because she'd made the decision to die.

Agreed, that her having future plans that she was excited about doesn’t mean she didn’t kill herself. I absolutely think the family situation was not as rosy as they make it out to be. Who knows if this computer job with her uncle was even something she wanted to do? Maybe the family pressured her into it? They suck and seem like they are still living in a fantasy world about their daughter’s identity. All of that being said, I can’t imagine her falling from their 8th floor balcony unnoticed at 5am. The ship was going to dock soon, right? Aren’t most people on cruises old? They get up at the crack of dawn. I’m sure staff was already out preparing things. Seems like someone would have seen her fall/jump off the ship in the early morning hours.
The eyewitnesses on the boat may or may not have seen her and Yellow on the elevator - who knows. I don’t really think she was taken and trafficked either. I don’t even think the shoes are that big of an issue if she left the room - maybe she was barefoot, maybe she grabbed flip flops. No scenario is really all that convincing to me. Anne Burrell gave an improv show the day before she committed suicide. Anthony Bourdain filmed an episode in France and was said to be in excellent spirits. Kate Spade’s husband and father both described her as seeming happy the day before she killed herself. I’m not saying Amy jumped—just that I don’t think it can be ruled out based on the fact she seemed to be having fun.
Some people feel a sense of calm and even happiness once they make the decision and have a plan.
People who are actively having an episode of crippling depression cannot get themselves organized and motivate enough to make a plan.

She was a lesbian whose family didn't accept that fact and thought she was living in sin. Anyone watching the documentary can clearly see she presents as a lesbian even before her girlfriends are interviewed. It is so sad that Yellow's life has been ruined with the allegation. He kept his job for a couple of years but then because of the allegations he wasn't able to get hired on cruise ships.
The more likely scenario is she argued with her family. She did not return with her brother to the room and instead returned five minutes later. The family are the one's who are suspicious. Her mother said in the documentary, “If you want to murder someone, just take them on a cruise.” A more probably scenario is that they argued. Another passenger said they heard loud noises and thought it was the single next door neighbor when it could have been the family. A more likely scenario is that her family did something to her than a 23 year old college graduate was trafficked in a country where prostitution is legal.
And then to cover up they did something for her or they know she jumped they made sure to go around saying they were looking for her. It is so suspicious they get off the cruise BEFORE the cruise even ends. Who does that instead of going around continuing to ask questions? When you look at the probability of being trafficked vs committing suicide /a family member killing you, being trafficked is way way less likely.
This theory is ridiculous. Nobody would still be talking about this if the family hadn't fought to keep it on people's radar. It would have died out within a few months otherwise. No way would they have worked so hard for publicity if they were guilty of harming her. That is one heartbroken family and I find it bizarre to suggest otherwise.
