Our HS did a mind fk on so many kids. It was just an awfully toxic program and coaching staff and environment. Some kids completely stopped playing soccer completely as a direct result. Others just left the program and never looked back. When things aren't merit-based--and by the time you are at the highest level at club--they do become about as merit-based as they will be --you see the politics and nepotism no longer working--it's not good for a kid's psyche.

What is wrong with you all? These are kids - not professional athletes. Why on earth does it matter if the level of HS is as high as club soccer? Its fun, they bond with people, they learn to work under different coaches with different age grounds and levels. They learn to play for something larger than themselves. They learn and experience what it means to represent their school and be supported by classmates.

What's the big deal about the "level" of HS soccer?

Our school isn't a public HS and it's mainly just parents in the stands---or other dudes. There aren't any girls to impress. None attend games. Lol

And hey- if they are good, they may even earn Gatorade player of the year (for which you MUST play HS not club-- and which can help with college). But that is not why they play. They play because its a differnet experience entirely than club.

So much vitrol and hate. Why don't we just cancel all HS sports because it's not going to lead to further development and college recruitment. Dumb. Let these kids live a little and have fun playing with friends for a few months of the year.

And, yes, there are teams in the DMV whose play is pretty high level. Go watch Gonzaga, St. Albans or Episcopal...big chunk of those players are top club players at mls or ecnl....

It’s just sht soccer, you know it. It’s always justified with the fun of it all. It’s garbage, it doesn’t help with college. It’s parents nostalgia because that’s all there was. No one likes riding the bus unless they’re getting playing time and it’s not fun if your friend doesn’t get to play. It is mostly a waste of time. Let it go, let your kid do better things with their talent and time. And if they have nothing better to do, then go ahead and strive for that Gatorade award.

+1 Glory Days

We always tell my kids not to peak in HS. Lol For some, this is the defining moment of their life which they will bring up ad nauseum as adults.

By Freshmen year in college, that's over. It's which school they are attending and the things they do there. Nobody gives two sh*ts about HS anymore after graduation.

My kids couldn't wait to get the fk out of HS. They were so over it by Fall of Senior year.

ha! My kids always rode home with me. They hated the long bus rides (our hs has a pretty wide -distance area- private school). They also hated all the wasted hours when they were required to stay at school from 2:30 and the game was at 7:30pm. And, they had lots of good friends on the team. It just becomes a grind---especially if you are an honors/AP student getting all As. Sure, Freshmen year it was so exciting--after that--not so much.

if they are in DC---the Gatorade award is easy. Maryland and VA and other larger states not so much. Being a DC Gatorade player is kind of laughable given the total # of public/private schools in the District. Try VA with Richmond, DMV, VA Beach, etc, etc. Maryland Baltimore, Bowie, Silver Spring, etc etc

Our Gatorade player didn't get recruited and isn't even playing college soccer. It's not as big a deal ---not like it was in the 80s/90s.

+100 they are recruiting MLS academy players, USL players, foreign International players, USNYT ID players...gatorade is not really a consideration--particularly any top schools. Frankly, with NIL, transfer portal and roster cuts---high school players, in general, aren't even attractive anymore. The men's rosters are getting older and more experienced. Gap years are becoming a bigger thing like sports like Hockey that pretty much starts at age 20 for college.

Isn't WJ coach (not sure which JV or V) an actual (ex)pro player, how are their teams doing?

Nope HS soccer sucks.

Who cares. They wouldn’t be able to field teams if it wasn’t fun or it was terrible in the way you are suggesting. Lots of MLS kids play HS but none I know play rec anything. As a general rule of thumb kids don't waste time on stuff that sucks unless their parents make them. So guess they like playing for their HS.

Kids don’t choose to play sports for their high schools. Parents decide which high school their kid is going to play for.
