I'm the OP. It went something like, "what's going on at the lake this weekend? I know you won't be there but I really miss (insert bar name here) and the quiet of being at the lake."
DH (after talking it over with me) : I think we've had inquiries to rent it.
I guarantee they believe you're lying about it maybe being booked and they're talking s*** about you for not allowing them to go.
Is that supposed to make OP feel bad?

No. Just saying that shameless moochers trying to scheme their way into your vacant vacation house will quickly flip to talking crap about you when you don't give in. Those aren't "friends," they're users.

I have stayed at friends' vaca spots many times but only upon their invitation and I always give it a deep clean. It's rude to ask but normal for friends to go without the owners (like it's rude to ask for a gift but normal to graciously receive one).

I find this thread fascinating! I do not have the means for a 2nd home. But if I did I would think one of the great parts and being able to share that with a friend. These are people who have been to the home before. They know where things are. You've seen them use your stuff. You're not losing money, the place is empty. Why wouldn't you say yes?
