I was gonna say, how EXACTLY did they segue into asking? That takes some chutzpah. "Even though you're not coming, you wouldn't mind if we went up there anyways, would you?" Uhhh, actually I would mind.

+1. Geesus.

I'm the OP. It went something like, "what's going on at the lake this weekend? I know you won't be there but I really miss (insert bar name here) and the quiet of being at the lake."

DH (after talking it over with me) : I think we've had inquiries to rent it.

I guarantee they believe you're lying about it maybe being booked and they're talking s*** about you for not allowing them to go.

Is that supposed to make OP feel bad?

Like how entitled can one be?

No. Just saying that shameless moochers trying to scheme their way into your vacant vacation house will quickly flip to talking crap about you when you don't give in. Those aren't "friends," they're users.

I have stayed at friends' vaca spots many times but only upon their invitation and I always give it a deep clean. It's rude to ask but normal for friends to go without the owners (like it's rude to ask for a gift but normal to graciously receive one).

I've only started this one.

You get it or you don't. When you have a beach house people who never invite you to anything want to come "hang out" at your place.

Its slimmy.

These are people who have been to the home before. They know where things are. You've seen them use your stuff. You're not losing money, the place is empty. Why wouldn't you say yes?

Wait, how do you know the house is empty, unless you are stalking them??!!

Holy crap.

Just a wild guess here but maybe that type of person has proven themselves untrustworthy.

More than once - maybe far more.

For situations like this, I always remember the admonition “No good deed goes unpunished.”

Unless it’s a friend I’ve traveled with, approve of their habits, and highly trust, this would be a hard NO from me.
