It depends on the school. At many privates Chicago will take down to a 3.6 or even lower. it can be a very hard admit from some schools and an exceedingly easy one for smart kids without top grades who ED from others. This dichotomy comes up continually on DCUM.

This was my child, almost exactly. Top private, top rigor, high 3.8 GPA, mid 1500s SAT (800 math), STEM major. Admitted to UNC, UVA, Michigan, UCLA, Berkeley, Columbia and Penn. Rejected Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Cornell and Brown. Waitlisted Emory, Dartmouth and Notre Dame.
