99% of us are descendants of ancestors that were alive when slavery was ingrained in the culture of their time. Specifically associating people of Indian descent with the sin of slavery is simply racism based on ignorance. Haley isn't getting my vote but the fact that her parents immigrated from India has nothing to do with it. When it comes to associating Haley with America's shameful history of slavery and the war that was necessary to end it, Haley is one of the few modern Republican politicians that has done something commendable with actual actions and not just words; she jeopardized her political future in a very red state with deep ties to our nation's history of slavery by, as governor, calling for and authorizing the removal of the confederate flag from the grounds of the S.C. Capital. It should have been removed long before she was governor and long before the 2015 tragedy in Charleston but no politician before her had the courage to do it and few Republican politicians would have had the courage to take the stance Haley did for fear of political backlash. She should have been faster in getting to the right side of history in that circumstance and I disagree with her on many political issues but I don't doubt her heart and brain being in the right place when it comes to her thoughts on the history of slavery in this country and the world.

I have less of an issue that she didn’t mention slavery as that the answer was complete GOP talking point word salad: “Blah blah freedom blah blah liberty blah blah blah.” If she had said patriot, she would have hit the trifecta.

She is also a former governor of South Carolina and should be familiar with the state's secession order which specifies SLAVERY as the reason for the state's action at the time.

Civil War/slavery is not a new issue, true, but it’s kryptonite for Republican politicians if the media chooses to not let it go. Unfortunately they’ve been permitted to talk out of both sides of their mouth for a long long time.
