Has this guy been charged yet? Is he still being held? I tried searching but couldn't find any follow up. It's been 5 months, what's happened?

This guy doesn’t need “support,” he needs to be permanently separated from society.

If you are defending him, please pick him up and keep him at your house. You can support him.

Seriously this is the only sane response.

STFU about supports. Any person committing a heinous act can claim to be mentally ill (bc what same person would do this?) He needs to be away from society, I couldn't care less what happens to him.

OK MAGA.

A person is MAGA if they think a person with an extensive history of breakdowns that include harrassing people, specifically - sexually harassing people, dating back years, who violently attacked two daycare providers and masturbated in front of 30 daycare children, shouldn't be permanently hospitalized? OK.

Frankly, if DC does this right, they could file a separate charge for each child present, couldn't they?

I'm the PP and farthest thing from MAGA. I'm a POC and Democrat.

I also think anyone who is remotely okay with this situation is a complete sicko.

Is the mass shooter in Maine also just having a mental health crisis?

Yes, probably. Mentally healthy people don't shoot 30 people or attack day care workers and masturbate in front of children. Recognizing that people are having mental health issues doesn't mean they should be excused for their crimes. Mental health issues this severe require a swift and severe response.

Like providing free housing so that the individual has time to "work on their issues."

Yes, they should get free housing since they can’t work. But that free housing should be in a secure place away from the rest of society.

It's called permanent psychiatric housing and it shouldn't be located in a residential neighborhood. It's not that difficult.

+1 This, but it's not considered PC to say it aloud. It's extremely sad, but some people suffer from mental health issues to a degree that it's necessary.

Can we stop with the "mental health issues" ? It's mental ILLNESS. Or if you prefer, psychiatric disorder. Psychiatric illness.

Can we stop blaming his pedophilic, sexual behavior on mental illness and call it what it really is: a mind in hard core drugs. All this tip toeing around is insane.

+1. Why do folks (generally on the left) shout that mental illness isn't to blame for mass school shooters ("it's just evil!"), but if it's a person who literally whipped out his you know what in front of a bunch of daycare kids after assaulting their teachers, it's preferred to say it's mental illness?

I think it’s all mental illness? And I think drugs are often used as self treatment by those who are mentally ill, so I don’t think you can separate it out.

This is an explanation, not an excuse, fwiw.

Permanent psychiatric housing on an involuntary basis is not constitutional.

When are you going to realize that the judicial system is sandbagging this country?

What? Long sentences in jail for committing actual crimes like this guy did are obviously "constitutional." And some of that time can be receiving psychiatric care or whatever in a fully contained treatment facility.

This isn't about someone with mental issues just in their head. This is a criminal who can be punished.

So then why did MPD refuse to arrest him multiple times before (per local residents complaining) and the USAO refused to charge him with crimes?

No one has a plausible answer for this.

Who knows but a very good question. I assume Parker's staff may be reading these posts. So let's put the question to the Councilman -- why did MPD refuse to arrest this aggressively dangerous person multiple times before? In fact, we should be asking all Councilmembers to investigate the number of repeated reports of dangerous behavior and the outcomes of these reports - are there arrests, prosecution, anything?

In order to arrest him it would have escalated and required the police to go hands on. In the post George Floyd environment few officers are going hands on unless their life or another officers safety is at risk. This is what the people of DC wanted.

+1 and I don’t blame them one single bit. Any officer involved would have their name and face plastered all over the Internet, their reputation dragged, and they would be labeled as racist.

DC voters wanted this.

They can be hands on without chokeholds and strangle holds. Those have been banned in many hospitals and hospital security sometimes deal with violent mental breakdown episodes without using them. What is this assumption that choke holds are required?

I wasn’t even talking about chokehold. Any arrest of any kind or any type of policing in general is seen and presented as racist. I don’t think this is a hospitable environment for policing.

The problem is that things can escalate quickly, and police have to make quick assessments of the situation....especially if that individual is tall/strong/large. It's also true even in schools when dealing with large, emotionally/behaviorally involved students who lose control quickly.

This is no different than in a hospital setting, so I repeat, if hospital security manages this, why can't police?

For instance, someone high on PCP going bezerk in an ER crowded with vulnerable patients on stretchers everywhere, tons of staff, and yes, hospital security manage this without chokeholds. And before anyone says hospitals can medicate patients, when someone is going off the rails, the best you can do is try to get a needle of haldol in them which still doesn't take effect for awhile and requires multiple doses, and you still can't even get close to the patient to stick them without security getting them under control first (or you risk sticking yourself after the patient).

Hospital security do this, it's an excuse that police want to use maneuvers that other security manage just fine without using.
