Glad for your little DD and so sorry about the strife with the neighbors. I think I missed something -- the dog died "while being monitored"? Was it in custody of animal control or something, waiting to be sure it wasn't infected/had rabies even though it supposedly had a vaccinatio record? Sorry if this got mentioned and somehow I missed it. I would be concerned at this point about why the dog died because I'd want to know if it had any disease that could be passed to your DD -- I know, you said she's healing well, but I still would wonder even though it's been a while.
As for the neighbors, I'm guessing you already have those physical threats on a police report--right? You will need all the documentation you can get. If you don't already have a doorbell camera/other cameras as well as motion sensor lights around the exterior of your house--I would get those, ASAP. Lights for the whole exterior, so if someone comes up to your house in the night the lights switch on and there's no cover of darkness to hide anyone. Sorry to have to suggest that, but that's reality when a neighbor is unhinged.

Yea, the dog was being monitored by animal control for five days. I think on the night of the last day the dog passed away and we do not know why.
We did not ask for the dog to be placed in condiment and be monitored. It’s standard in our area after an attack that breaks the skin. Even if the dog attacks another dog.
It sounds like animal control failed to get the dog medical care after you kicked the dog hard and it probably died of neglect or a medical issue from being attacked.
Since everyone is wildly speculating, here is my guess - the neighbors are actually right in this case - that the dog died of stress. Even though a small dog its possible it had torsion - a horrible way to go - or something else caused by the stress of being separated, etc. This is a horrible outcome but 100% of their own doing. You definitely needed to take your daughter to be looked at, from there - what happens with animal control is out of your hands. Not your fault the dog was quarantined.

Yes. They commiserate but seem like they want to stay out of it. All our neighbors are 60+ and retired. Most are well into their 70s or 80s.

Please be very careful, OP. I would honestly take the advice of the police and install additional cameras + not walk the neighborhood (while also searching for a new home). It sucks and you shouldn't have to but these people seem to have history and have also threatened harm. Who knows what they are capable of regardless of a protection order and you also don't know whether they have weapons in the home.

How hard did you kick the dog, OP? Like hard enough to cause internal injuries? Are they saying you killed the dog?
I kicked it fairly hard in ribs. It was able to immediately run to the owners. I guess it’s possible I could have caused internal injuries.
But no, the owners are claiming the dog died of “stress”.
I don’t know what actually happened or caused the dogs death.
It's their own fault for not properly training the dog and for not immediately running after it.

It really is so scary. We have a large dog too. She’s NEVER outside without a leash (unless in our backyard with 8 foot fences). Never has she shown any aggression but we understand she is an animal and animals are unpredictable. Not worth the risk.
I keep wondering, what if these people had a large breed? It could have been so so much worse.

OP, not sure if you're still reading but a neighborhood dog (big Lab) attacked my dog (small Yorkie) and I did the same as you (kicked the dog). The owner was NUTS and went crazy and called Animal Control on ME! Well, as Animal Control pulled up to the house, the woman's insane dog went after a mother and her baby (in a carriage). That dog now has to walk around in a full muzzle, as it should. I guarantee you there are other reports out there.

Omg. What did the police say about a grown man threatening to abuse a small child?
Also, have you befriended anyone else in your neighborhood? I think it’s time to get your side of what is going on out to a few neighbors who may be sympathetic and hopefully spread the word around. You are the entirely sympathetic family here and I guarantee a man who threatens *a freaking baby* isn’t someone without a history of known altercations with people.
The police didn’t disclose but they hinted that they had a history with this couple. They suggested we put up more security cameras and avoid walking around the area for awhile.
We have neighbors we are friendly with but none really seem like they want to get involved which I understand. We are the only young family we know of in this neighborhood.

That’s true. Maybe I killed the dog.
But, I don’t regret kicking it. My daughter managed to avoid stitches, but if it had continued biting or if I had grabbed it while it was latched on it could have been worse.
My priority was my kid, not this dog.

Unlikely. Bad pet owners are unlikely to realize that they are bad pet owners and learn to be good pet owners. They'll continue to be bad pet owners and will blame all the problems on the victims (in this case, OP).
It was bad before, but since the pandemic, there has been a huge increase in the number of bad pet owners. People who shouldn't own pets had previously not owned pets, but a lot more of the got pets over the pandemic "for companionship" and it's exacerbated the problems.
The dog was on the porch on their property and ran off. This could happen to anyone.
Not anyone who appropriately handles their dog and follows the law.
If the dog was on the porch with them they were following the law. They had the dog on their property.
They were following the law until the moment the dog left their property and attacked a child on a public sidewalk.

And then it ran off and attacked my toddler on public property (the sidewalk). There’s the issue.
They had the option of training the dog to stay on the porch with the owner or realizing their dog is aggressive and putting it on a leash.
