I’d say our staff meeting was about 50/50.

About 5 out of 100 teacher wore their masks during the PD today.

Can confirm the masking numbers, as the parent of a child at one of those schools. The kids who are on track to be doctors and scientists are trying not to miss time in the classroom for academic, rather than purely social, reasons. Plus there have been outbreaks at some of the feeder schools recently so they may have a positive sibling at home.
That is pure comedy gold! Elementary kids already "fast tracked". I promise you that if they miss some school due to illness or any other reason now, if they are going to be a doctor or scientist, they will not be impacted.
Tell me you're not in FCPS without telling me you're not in FCPS. Carson and Rocky Run are middle schools. Plenty of 7th and 8th graders are taking HS level courses at those schools. Of course the kids will stay home if they get sick, but why not wear a mask if it's going cut the odds of you getting sick? They care about school and don't want to get sick and miss class if they can help it. My son and his friends are wearing 94/95 masks, not the cloth ones that are less effective.
+1 My kids are not going to risk missing school to mess up their GPAs and they are both in MS taking 2 HS classes each. They don't mind the mask. Not worth the risk. If covid did not exist and we just had colds, they'd just go to school sick.
NP. We are very different. I let mine sleep in today when I saw it was an early dismissal. He’s also taking high school courses in middle school. Instead of worrying about missing a day, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to not have to catch the 6:40 bus. He’s not sick. I don’t think this will affect college admissions. I’ve never understood the parents who think school can’t be missed.
Some parents teach their kids that school is important.
DP I am an Asian double Ivy grad so… yeah I know. But mental health, spontaneity, and occasional fun are important too!
I know parents who rarely took their kids anywhere (even before Covid) out of a fear of them getting sick and missing school. I mean, you do you but… I’d rather enjoy life a little and take the chance…
White lady, double Ivy grad and have a happy enjoyable life but also don't let me kids miss school for no reason.
I’m the poster who let my kid sleep in yesterday. I’m not going to state my race or education because it’s not relevant. My son catches a bus at 6:40 every day. 6:40. So yes, I do not feel any guilt about letting him sleep in yesterday. He checked Schoology and completed his assignments while I was at work. They were done before I got home. I really think I’m modeling balance and responsibility. He still needed to get his work done by a deadline even if he wasn’t physically there. It’s not like he slept in and then did nothing.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:I'm sad about this idea that kids "can't get sick" because missing school will set them back too far. What is wrong with our society? Same goes for employers who won't provide sick leave or expect people to come to work sick. Just take normal life precautions (like hand washing, keep stress levels low, exercising, eating well) and accept that once in a while everyone gets sick and things get missed.
This has nothing to do with masks, but the idea that a kid "can't afford to get sick" is absolutely ridiculous and a sign of really poor life balance.
Tell me you don't have a kid in AP or IB classes without telling me you don't have a kid in AP or IB classes.
My kids are 11 and 9.

So many of us Asian children of immigrants that are really pushing back against the way we were raised because kids should be kids and the pressure from our childhoods was not fun. It's interesting to see wealthy caucasian families treating their children this way now while we are doing the opposite. Chances are, your AAP/TJ kids will turn out like me and the other Asian PP who are putting a lot less pressure on our kids.
