Lots of Latin drama and shouting in the courtroom. The DR AG is personally involved, if she wanted his passport returned today probably would have happened.

More to play out.

It will be almost 3 weeks that he's been held as a "witness" by the time the next hearing rolls around. I guess it gives them time to manufacture some story against him.

This thread definitely needs to remain open because there are so many teachable issues here, this one being how chaotic and unprofessional law enforcement can be in another country. This could happen to anyone or anyone’s child. I think of Amanda Knox for starters. I don’t understand why DR is allowed to keep him there if he’s only a witness and he’s already told them everything he knows and been interviewed extensively. They have no evidence of a crime. Nothing. He hasn’t been charged with anything.

They should be able to keep his passport in perpetuity. The way this is unfolding is frightening.

One got passport, one did not. The spider senses of some senior investigators are up, we don’t know why.

They will likely return it or arrest him on or before 3/28.

Does travel insurance cover legal fees?

Prosecutors lied and said the didn’t confiscate his passport but he lost it.

Even her parents did not want this!

They are not the prosecutor.

I’m sure her parents would rather believe he tried to save her than any more unsavory options. His story may be true, we may never know.

The prosecutor must have reasons. Keeping him does not boost tourism.

The parents said there was no evidence of anything other than an accidental drowning. DR law requires that he be charged or released. He’s not even a suspect. It’s illegal detention. US Consulate should be reigning hellfire. US looks so weak here.

It would be even more of a financial strain if not the case. Was discussed at hearing today.

Lying DR prosecutors. I don’t get their end game. The parents gave them a huge opportunity to close the case, at lease against this “witness”.
