The worst part for Trump is that he could have won this thing. If he had actually done a better job on COVID, he would have been a shoe-in. This was his election to lose by failing at his COVID response.

My point was that careless Republicans are the source of the errors in previous years.

And yes, of course people are being more careful. Plus, this year, county offices have much more robust ballot curing notification practices, so those days invalidated mail-in ballots are getting fixed by the voter.
