Is there any forum here without these nutters?

He's being a little overly dramatic.
No matter what happens, this is a time limited event. When it is over, people will go on trips again and will stay at hotels.
Many old people will die, which means a transfer of wealth to their heirs. There will be less burden on pension plans and on Social Security as well.
The one business I DO think this event will be the death knell for, is colleges. Many were poised to go out of business already. With a switch to intensive online instruction for thre rest of the year, I think many will not reopen.
I think a lot of unexpected things will happen. Online will explode as a way of working. I think sadly there will be far fewer elderly especially the very elderly (over 70). A new world view will happen with the survivors.

This is only beginning.
Ugh that’s really terrifying.
Didn't we kind of know this from China, that younger people could also experience severe illness but that it took a little longer before they got that sick?

2 died. Woman (55) and her brother (age ?). related to initial death in NJ (a friend)
4 members of the family are in the hospital, 3 in critical condition. Other family members from a family function being tested.

My question: what are the "life saving drugs" the hospital wants to get from the CDC? Are these drugs part of a clinical trial?

There’s no such thing.

Sometimes it helps to read all the way to the end of an article,
“ Although the design and production of the prospective vaccine was incredibly fast, evaluation of it will take considerable time. All of the participants will be followed for 12 months after the second vaccination to collect the data researchers initially need to figure out whether it is safe and effective.”
this is for it to be officially proclaimed effective. if the results seem promising on the ground people will line up for it and nobody will stop them.
This vaccine won't be available for 18 month to 2 years at a bare minimum. The usual timeline is 5+ years. The FDA is not going to skirt the safety issues and they will monitor those getting the vaccine now for a full year.
My DD got a fully-approved and tested vax, that turned out to kill a number of babies, so they pulled the vax.
It could be a looooooooong time before this vax comes to market, because it has to be thoroughly tested. You don't want to kill healthy people with a vax that's supposed to save lives.

Unfortunately we may be required to deal with these problems in the abstract. We have crippled the global economy. We can't throw tens and tens of millions of people out of work and destroy their livelihood and make them lose their homes and even become homeless just to save a few elderly people. That is the hard choice we are going to have to face in due time.

You should be an insurance actuary. Or an airline executive, where they do calculations of how much a particular part or repair costs vs. the value of human lives.
Sorry but I think my immuno supressed 70 year old dad is worth saving. As is my cerebral palsy stricken, 30 year old brother. Unemployment can be fixed; remember the WPA? Death, alas, is permanent.
Am I worth saving? I'm only 50 but I have an underlying condition. But I also have two kids who are still young enough to need their mom. Alive, even if unemployed.
We need to save our elderly and sick. But something tells me than dropping cash from helicopters, it would cheaper, more fun, more effective for everyone if they sent them to Disneyworld, Hawaii in quarantine while the rest of us young folks build up immunity and keep the economy going.
