OP here. No, she knew that the 8-year-old would be in virtual school and the 3-year-old would be home. She didn't arrive until September when the schedules were already set. And, we FaceTimed so she could see her room, her bathroom, her personal kitchen, the gym, etc. She seemed very happy with the accommodations.

I‘ve met a lot of au pairs and very few were interested in their charges at all. I don’t think it’s their fault though, they are mostly very young, want to travel and meet boyfriends and aren’t paid even remotely what nannies are worth. People should stop confusing au pairs with nannies, they are more like an older child that can legally watch your kids.

OP’s not unhappy. Just miserly. She already say have 11 cents per hour y’all. And her friend used special math learnt at a Trump rally to estimate her au pair costs $30k per year. It’s all the TP and food and marriage therapy and therapy for being called out on dcum

I saw an au pair's bedroom at an acquaintance's home. Her room was furnished in cast off's from the husband's bachelor days and the washer/dryer was right outside. The rest of the home was professionally decorated. The au pair was definitely not treated as a family member, nor even a 'mother's helper'. She was a servant and the mother was very happy with the program cost vs paying a nanny. It was all rather sad.

The NYT posted an article at the beginning of this past summer about how au pairs were caught unawares when the shutdown happened. They expected to have part of each day free, when children were in school, and instead had the children all day. In some cases the au pairs had to isolate at home too and could not explore their surroundings.

"The vast majority of complaints coming from au pairs appears to disappear into a bureaucratic black hole, where they aren’t thoroughly investigated or even publicly reported. A State Department spokesman told Politico Magazine it received 62 complaints from au pairs and families in 2015. But according to a State Department internal analysis of the program obtained by Politico Magazine, that’s inaccurate: Au pair agencies received and reported to the government more than 3,500 incidents that year.

All this casts a shadow over a government program bringing thousands of domestic workers, mostly young women, to the United States each year. It was designed to showcase American values and generate international goodwill. But how can it achieve that when worker protections are minimal and oversight is scarce, and as a result many of these women claim to suffer the worst that America has to offer?"

The problem seems to be that the au pair expects a cultural exchange while the host family is often only looking for cheap labor. Politico.com did a well-written expose and pointed out that lobbyists for the involved employment agencies spend a great deal of money to defeat any proposed reforms.

A friend of mine has an au pair and estimates her total annual cost at 30K....not exactly cheap labor.

That's what she was telling you...

It is indentured labor.

The article says there is now tougher oversight. They cant update the laws, because then it will make US diplomats vulnerable - another country can strip their immunity and prosecute for anything (not necessarily nanny related), these things are based on international laws and rule of reciprocity...

They really is the attraction isn’t it? Watching people reveal their true colors after living in their little echo chambers and realize that almost nobody likes them
