Really? I didn’t think Ellen Page was ever that feminine looking. Honestly, the only real difference I see is a short haircut.


+1. I'm curious to see him in acting roles now. I admit I never loved him as an actor before -- always just seemed awkward and kind of stilted (as many former child actors do, so that's what I attributed it to) -- curious whether he will now seem a little more natural in roles. Hope he is happy in his new life!

Page doesn’t actually look happy on the Time cover. (But maybe that’s because Page is trying to project being a tough, masculine man?)

Even clothing norms are difficult to define. I see trans women wearing tight dresses, high heels, make up, long hair etc. I am a heterosexual married female with kids, and it has to be a wedding or royal gala before I'll get out of jeans and a t-shirt to wear heels or make-up. Am I failing to live up to female gender norms?

I’m confused. On the one hand, we’re supposed to throw gender norms out the window, right? No pink or blue. Etc. Then trans women seem to adopt a hyper-feminine, clearly girly aesthetic. Kaitlin Jenner had a glam room and dresses in tight dresses and stillettos with heavy makeup and fake nails. I’m a hetero woman, and I never dress as girly as she does.

I’m glad Page is doing what makes him feel comfortable.

Right. And we know, through fetal genetic testing, that XX = female and XY = male. And genitalia aren't the only indicators of biological sex ... there are organs, like the uterus and then glands - prostate and mammary. Women have secondary sex characteristics like breasts.

Why are we debating science of sex? You can acknowledge the biology of sex and also recognize that sexual and gender identity are at the same time fluid for many people and that what sex a person identifies as may not always align with their biological sex. I can have a vagina and also sexually identify as a man and want to conform to gender norms for men in terms of clothes, demeanor, relationships, etc. But I'm still not biologically a man. And that's okay. It doesn't diminish my orientation.
